Confession of Sin

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution
Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter
Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise

Venite Psalm 95:1 to 7
Come, let us sing to the Lord;

The Lessons

Psalm 25

⁽¹⁾ To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;⁽²⁾ in you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.⁽³⁾ No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse.⁽⁴⁾ Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths;

⁽⁵⁾ guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.⁽⁶⁾ Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.⁽⁷⁾ Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD.⁽⁸⁾ Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

Genesis Chapter 8

⁽⁶⁾ After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark⁽⁷⁾ and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.⁽⁸⁾ Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.⁽⁹⁾ But the dove could find no place to set its feet because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark.

⁽¹⁰⁾ He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark.⁽¹¹⁾ When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.⁽¹²⁾ He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.⁽¹³⁾ By the first day of the first month of Noah's six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry.

⁽¹⁴⁾ By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.⁽¹⁵⁾ Then God said to Noah,⁽¹⁶⁾ Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives.⁽¹⁷⁾ Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you-- the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground-- so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number upon it.'

⁽¹⁸⁾ So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons' wives.⁽¹⁹⁾ All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds-- everything that moves on the earth-- came out of the ark, one kind after another.⁽²⁰⁾ Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.⁽²¹⁾ The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: 'Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

⁽²²⁾ As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.'

Hebrews Chapter 4

⁽¹⁴⁾ Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.⁽¹⁵⁾ For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-- yet was without sin.⁽¹⁶⁾ Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.⁽¹⁾ Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.⁽²⁾ He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.⁽³⁾ This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.⁽⁴⁾ No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was.

⁽⁵⁾ So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father.'⁽⁶⁾ And he says in another place, 'You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.'

John Chapter 2

⁽²³⁾ Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name.⁽²⁴⁾ But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men.⁽²⁵⁾ He did not need man's testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.⁽¹⁾ Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.⁽²⁾ He came to Jesus at night and said, 'Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.'⁽³⁾ In reply Jesus declared, 'I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.'⁽⁴⁾ How can a man be born when he is old?' Nicodemus asked. 'Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!'

⁽⁵⁾ Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.⁽⁶⁾ Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.⁽⁷⁾ You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'⁽⁸⁾ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.'

⁽⁹⁾ How can this be?' Nicodemus asked.⁽¹⁰⁾ You are Israel's teacher,' said Jesus, 'and do you not understand these things?⁽¹¹⁾ I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.⁽¹²⁾ I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

⁽¹³⁾ No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven-- the Son of Man.⁽¹⁴⁾ Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,⁽¹⁵⁾ that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
