Ordinary Time
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Phillipians 1:2

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter
O God make speed to save us, O Lord make haste to help us

O Gracious Light,
pure brightness of everliving Father in heaven
O Jesus Christ holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun
and our eyes behold the vesper light
we sing your praises O God: Father Son and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices
O Son of God, O Giver of Life
and to be glorified through all worlds.

The earth is the Lord's for he made it: Come let us adore him.

The Lessons

Psalm 36

(1) An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes. (2) For he flatters himself in his own eyes, When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates. (3) The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased to be wise and to do good. (4) He devises wickedness on his bed; He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil.

(5) Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. (6) Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep; O LORD, You preserve man and beast. (7) How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. (8) They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.

(9) For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light. (10) Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You, And Your righteousness to the upright in heart. (11) Let not the foot of pride come against me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away. (12) There the workers of iniquity have fallen; They have been cast down and are not able to rise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm 39

(1) I said, 'I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.' (2) I was mute with silence, I held my peace even from good; And my sorrow was stirred up. (3) My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: (4) LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.

(5) Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah (6) Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them. (7) And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. (8) Deliver me from all my transgressions; Do not make me the reproach of the foolish.

(9) I was mute, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it. (10) Remove Your plague from me; I am consumed by the blow of Your hand. (11) When with rebukes You correct man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor. Selah (12) Hear my prayer, O LORD, And give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner, as all my fathers were.

(13) Remove Your gaze from me, that I may regain strength, Before I go away and am no more.'

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Proverbs Chapter 15

(16) Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure with trouble. (17) Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred. (18) A wrathful man stirs up strife, But he who is slow to anger allays contention. (19) The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway.

(20) A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother. (21) Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, But a man of understanding walks uprightly. (22) Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established. (23) A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!

(24) The way of life winds upward for the wise, That he may turn away from hell below. (25) The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, But He will establish the boundary of the widow. (26) The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD, But the words of the pure are pleasant. (27) He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live.

(28) The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil. (29) The LORD is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous. (30) The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, And a good report makes the bones healthy. (31) The ear that hears the rebukes of life Will abide among the wise.

(32) He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. (33) The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

1 Timothy Chapter 1

(18) This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, (19) having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, (20) of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. (1) Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, (2) for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. (3) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, (4) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

(5) For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, (6) who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (7) for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle -- I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying -- a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. (8) I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Matthew Chapter 12

(33) Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. (34) Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (35) A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. (36) But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

(37) For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.' (38) Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, 'Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.' (39) But He answered and said to them, 'An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. (40) For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

(41) The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. (42) The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

The Canticles

A canticle is a hymn, or other Christian song of praise with lyrics taken from biblical texts

The Second Song of Isaiah
Quaerite Dominum Isaiah 55:6 to 11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found;
call upon him when he draws near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the evil ones their thoughts;
And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion,
and to our God, for he will richly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from the heavens
and return not again, but water the earth,
Bringing forth life and giving growth,
seed for sowing and bread for eating,
So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it will not return to me empty;
But it will accomplish that which I have purposed,
and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Song of Mary
Magnificat Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
  the holy catholic Church,
  the communion of saints,
  the forgiveness of sins,
  the resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
  thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
  on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
  And forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
  and the power, and the glory,
  forever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages
a short intercessory prayer

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us by your Holy Spirit.

Seasonal Collect:  Proper 3 The Sunday closest to May 25
Grant, O Lord, that the course of this world may be peaceably governed by your providence; and that your Church may joyfully serve you in confidence and serenity; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission: Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.

Personal Prayers and Reflection

This is a time to pause, consider and listen. Pray for yourself and others.

Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Conclude with following
May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Romans 15:13
