--Today is the Feast of St John-Marie Vianney--
Ordinary Time
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Saint and Major Saints' Days

You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. Ephesians 2:19

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter
O God make speed to save us, O Lord make haste to help us

O Gracious Light,
pure brightness of everliving Father in heaven
O Jesus Christ holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun
and our eyes behold the vesper light
we sing your praises O God: Father Son and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices
O Son of God, O Giver of Life
and to be glorified through all worlds.

The mercy of the Lord is everlasting: Come let us adore him.

The Lessons

Psalm 85

(1) You showed favor to your land, O LORD; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. (2) You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins. Selah (3) You set aside all your wrath and turned from your fierce anger. (4) Restore us again, O God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us.

(5) Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations? (6) Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? (7) Show us your unfailing love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation. (8) I will listen to what God the LORD will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints-- but let them not return to folly.

(9) Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. (10) Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. (11) Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. (12) The LORD will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.

(13) Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm 86

(1) Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. (2) Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. (3) Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long. (4) Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

(5) You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. (6) Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. (7) In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me. (8) Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours.

(9) All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. (10) For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. (11) Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. (12) I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever.

(13) For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave. (14) The arrogant are attacking me, O God; a band of ruthless men seeks my life-- men without regard for you. (15) But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. (16) Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the son of your maidservant.

(17) Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Judges Chapter 8

(22) The Israelites said to Gideon, 'Rule over us-- you, your son and your grandson-- because you have saved us out of the hand of Midian.' (23) But Gideon told them, 'I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The LORD will rule over you.' (24) And he said, 'I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.' (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.) (25) They answered, 'We'll be glad to give them.' So they spread out a garment, and each man threw a ring from his plunder onto it.

(26) The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels, not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels' necks. (27) Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family. (28) Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon's lifetime, the land enjoyed peace forty years. (29) Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live.

(30) He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives. (31) His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelech. (32) Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. (33) No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god and

(34) did not remember the LORD their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. (35) They also failed to show kindness to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) for all the good things he had done for them.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Acts Chapter 4

(1) The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. (2) They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. (3) They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. (4) But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.

(5) The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. (6) Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family. (7) They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: 'By what power or what name did you do this?' (8) Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: 'Rulers and elders of the people!

(9) If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, (10) then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. (11) He is ''the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.' (12) Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.'

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

John Chapter 1

(43) The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, 'Follow me.' (44) Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. (45) Philip found Nathanael and told him, 'We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.' (46) Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?' Nathanael asked. 'Come and see,' said Philip.

(47) When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, 'Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.' (48) How do you know me?' Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, 'I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.' (49) Then Nathanael declared, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.' (50) Jesus said, 'You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that.'

(51) He then added, 'I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'

The Canticles

The Third Song of Isaiah       Surge, illuminare
Isaiah 60:1 to 3, 11a, 14c, 18 to 19

Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has dawned upon you.
For behold, darkness covers the land;
deep gloom enshrouds the peoples.
But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will appear upon you.
Nations will stream to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawning.
Your gates will always be open;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of the Lord,
The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
Violence will no more be heard in your land,
ruin or destruction within your borders.
You will call your walls, Salvation,
and all your portals, Praise.
The sun will no more be your light by day;
by night you will not need the brightness of the moon.
The Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Song of Mary
Magnificat Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
  the holy catholic Church,
  the communion of saints,
  the forgiveness of sins,
  the resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting. Amen.

  hallowed be thy Name,
  thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
  on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

  forever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages
?a short intercessory prayer

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us by your Holy Spirit.

Closing Prayers

Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Conclude with following
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14
