Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution
Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

pure brightness of everliving Father in heaven

Now as we come to the setting of the sun
and our eyes behold the vesper light

The Lessons

Psalm Chapter 119

⁽¹²¹⁾ I have done justice and righteousness; Do not leave me to my oppressors. ⁽¹²²⁾ Be surety for Your servant for good; Do not let the proud oppress me. ⁽¹²³⁾ My eyes fail from seeking Your salvation And Your righteous word. ⁽¹²⁴⁾ Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy, And teach me Your statutes.

⁽¹²⁵⁾ I am Your servant; Give me understanding, That I may know Your testimonies. ⁽¹²⁶⁾ It is time for You to act, O LORD, For they have regarded Your law as void. ⁽¹²⁷⁾ Therefore I love Your commandments More than gold, yes, than fine gold! ⁽¹²⁸⁾ Therefore all Your precepts concerning all things I consider to be right; I hate every false way.

⁽¹²⁹⁾ Your testimonies are wonderful; Therefore my soul keeps them. ⁽¹³⁰⁾ The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. ⁽¹³¹⁾ I opened my mouth and panted, For I longed for Your commandments. ⁽¹³²⁾ Look upon me and be merciful to me, As Your custom is toward those who love Your name.

⁽¹³³⁾ Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me. ⁽¹³⁴⁾ Redeem me from the oppression of man, That I may keep Your precepts. ⁽¹³⁵⁾ Make Your face shine upon Your servant, And teach me Your statutes. ⁽¹³⁶⁾ Rivers of water run down from my eyes, Because men do not keep Your law.

⁽¹³⁷⁾ Righteous are You, O LORD, And upright are Your judgments. ⁽¹³⁸⁾ Your testimonies, which You have commanded, Are righteous and very faithful. ⁽¹³⁹⁾ My zeal has consumed me, Because my enemies have forgotten Your words. ⁽¹⁴⁰⁾ Your word is very pure; Therefore Your servant loves it.

⁽¹⁴¹⁾ I am small and despised, Yet I do not forget Your precepts. ⁽¹⁴²⁾ Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth. ⁽¹⁴³⁾ Trouble and anguish have overtaken me, Yet Your commandments are my delights. ⁽¹⁴⁴⁾ The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting; Give me understanding, and I shall live.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Numbers Chapter 16

⁽³⁶⁾ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: ⁽³⁷⁾ Tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, to pick up the censers out of the blaze, for they are holy, and scatter the fire some distance away. ⁽³⁸⁾ The censers of these men who sinned against their own souls, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar. Because they presented them before the LORD, therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign to the children of Israel.' ⁽³⁹⁾ So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned up had presented, and they were hammered out as a covering on the altar,

⁽⁴⁰⁾ to be a memorial to the children of Israel that no outsider, who is not a descendant of Aaron, should come near to offer incense before the LORD, that he might not become like Korah and his companions, just as the LORD had said to him through Moses. ⁽⁴¹⁾ On the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, 'You have killed the people of the LORD.' ⁽⁴²⁾ Now it happened, when the congregation had gathered against Moses and Aaron, that they turned toward the tabernacle of meeting; and suddenly the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. ⁽⁴³⁾ Then Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of meeting.

⁽⁴⁴⁾ And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ⁽⁴⁵⁾ Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' And they fell on their faces. ⁽⁴⁶⁾ So Moses said to Aaron, 'Take a censer and put fire in it from the altar, put incense on it, and take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the LORD. The plague has begun.' ⁽⁴⁷⁾ Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people. So he put in the incense and made atonement for the people.

⁽⁴⁸⁾ And he stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped. ⁽⁴⁹⁾ Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the Korah incident. ⁽⁵⁰⁾ So Aaron returned to Moses at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, for the plague had stopped.

Romans Chapter 4

⁽¹³⁾ For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. ⁽¹⁴⁾ For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, ⁽¹⁵⁾ because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression. ⁽¹⁶⁾ Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all

⁽¹⁷⁾ (as it is written, 'I have made you a father of many nations') in the presence of Him whom he believed -- God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; ⁽¹⁸⁾ who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, 'So shall your descendants be.' ⁽¹⁹⁾ And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb. ⁽²⁰⁾ He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,

⁽²¹⁾ and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. ⁽²²⁾ And therefore 'it was accounted to him for righteousness.' ⁽²³⁾ Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, ⁽²⁴⁾ but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead,

⁽²⁵⁾ who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.

Matthew Chapter 20

⁽¹⁾ For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. ⁽²⁾ Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. ⁽³⁾ And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, ⁽⁴⁾ and said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went.

⁽⁵⁾ Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. ⁽⁶⁾ And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day?' ⁽⁷⁾ They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.' ⁽⁸⁾ So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.'

⁽⁹⁾ And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. ⁽¹⁰⁾ But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. ⁽¹¹⁾ And when they had received it, they complained against the landowner, ⁽¹²⁾ saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.'

⁽¹³⁾ But he answered one of them and said, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? ⁽¹⁴⁾ Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. ⁽¹⁵⁾ Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?' ⁽¹⁶⁾ So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.'

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
