Epiphany
Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:3

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter
O God make speed to save us, O Lord make haste to help us

O Gracious Light,
pure brightness of everliving Father in heaven
O Jesus Christ holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun
and our eyes behold the vesper light
we sing your praises O God: Father Son and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices
O Son of God, O Giver of Life
and to be glorified through all worlds.

The Lord has shown forth his glory: Come let us adore him.

The Lessons

Psalm Chapter 18

(21) For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not done evil by turning from my God. (22) All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. (23) I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. (24) The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

(25) To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, (26) to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. (27) You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty. (28) You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

(29) With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. (30) As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. (31) For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? (32) It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.

(33) He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. (34) He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. (35) You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great. (36) You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn.

(37) I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. (38) I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. (39) You armed me with strength for battle; you made my adversaries bow at my feet. (40) You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes.

(41) They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer. (42) I beat them as fine as dust borne on the wind; I poured them out like mud in the streets. (43) You have delivered me from the attacks of the people; you have made me the head of nations; people I did not know are subject to me. (44) As soon as they hear me, they obey me; foreigners cringe before me.

(45) They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. (46) The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! (47) He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me, (48) who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from violent men you rescued me.

(49) Therefore I will praise you among the nations, O LORD; I will sing praises to your name. (50) He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Genesis Chapter 4

(17) Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. (18) To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech. (19) Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. (20) Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

(21) His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. (22) Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah. (23) Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me. (24) If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.'

(25) Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, 'God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.' (26) Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.

Hebrews Chapter 3

(1) Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. (2) He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. (3) Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. (4) For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

(5) Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. (6) But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. (7) So, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you hear his voice, (8) do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert,

(9) where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. (10) That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' (11) So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.''

John Chapter 1

(43) The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, 'Follow me.' (44) Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. (45) Philip found Nathanael and told him, 'We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.' (46) Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?' Nathanael asked. 'Come and see,' said Philip.

(47) When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, 'Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.' (48) How do you know me?' Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, 'I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.' (49) Then Nathanael declared, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.' (50) Jesus said, 'You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that.'

(51) He then added, 'I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'

The Canticles

The Third Song of Isaiah       Surge, illuminare
Isaiah 60:1 to 3, 11a, 14c, 18 to 19

Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has dawned upon you.
For behold, darkness covers the land;
deep gloom enshrouds the peoples.
But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will appear upon you.
Nations will stream to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawning.
Your gates will always be open;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of the Lord,
The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
Violence will no more be heard in your land,
ruin or destruction within your borders.
You will call your walls, Salvation,
and all your portals, Praise.
The sun will no more be your light by day;
by night you will not need the brightness of the moon.
The Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Song of Mary
Magnificat Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
  the holy catholic Church,
  the communion of saints,
  the forgiveness of sins,
  the resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
  thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
  on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
  And forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
  and the power, and the glory,
  forever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages
?a short intercessory prayer

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us by your Holy Spirit.

Seasonal Collect:  First Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of our Lord
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Closing Prayers

The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Conclude with following
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14
