Epiphany
Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:3

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter
O God make speed to save us, O Lord make haste to help us

O Gracious Light,
pure brightness of everliving Father in heaven
O Jesus Christ holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun
and our eyes behold the vesper light
we sing your praises O God: Father Son and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices
O Son of God, O Giver of Life
and to be glorified through all worlds.

The Lord has shown forth his glory: Come let us adore him.

The Lessons

Psalm 18

(21) For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God. (22) For all His judgments were before me, And I did not put away His statutes from me. (23) I was also blameless before Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. (24) Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.

(25) With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless; (26) With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd. (27) For You will save the humble people, But will bring down haughty looks. (28) For You will light my lamp; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

(29) For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall. (30) As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. (31) For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? (32) It is God who arms me with strength, And makes my way perfect.

(33) He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places. (34) He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. (35) You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. (36) You enlarged my path under me, So my feet did not slip.

(37) I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them; Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed. (38) I have wounded them, So that they could not rise; They have fallen under my feet. (39) For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. (40) You have also given me the necks of my enemies, So that I destroyed those who hated me.

(41) They cried out, but there was none to save; Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them. (42) Then I beat them as fine as the dust before the wind; I cast them out like dirt in the streets. (43) You have delivered me from the strivings of the people; You have made me the head of the nations; A people I have not known shall serve me. (44) As soon as they hear of me they obey me; The foreigners submit to me.

(45) The foreigners fade away, And come frightened from their hideouts. (46) The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted. (47) It is God who avenges me, And subdues the peoples under me; (48) He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man.

(49) Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name. (50) Great deliverance He gives to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Genesis Chapter 4

(17) And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son -- Enoch. (18) To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech. (19) Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. (20) And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

(21) His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. (22) And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah. (23) Then Lamech said to his wives: 'Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. (24) If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.'

(25) And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, 'For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.' (26) And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.

Thanks be to God.

Hebrews Chapter 3

(1) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, (2) who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. (3) For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. (4) For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.

(5) And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, (6) but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. (7) Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you will hear His voice, (8) Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness,

(9) Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. (10) Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.' (11) So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.' '

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

John Chapter 1

(43) The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, 'Follow Me.' (44) Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. (45) Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote -- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.' (46) And Nathanael said to him, 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' Philip said to him, 'Come and see.'

(47) Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, 'Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!' (48) Nathanael said to Him, 'How do You know me?' Jesus answered and said to him, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.' (49) Nathanael answered and said to Him, 'Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!' (50) Jesus answered and said to him, 'Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these.'

(51) And He said to him, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.'

The Canticles

A canticle is a hymn, or other Christian song of praise with lyrics taken from biblical texts

The Third Song of Isaiah       Surge, illuminare
Isaiah 60:1 to 3, 11a, 14c, 18 to 19

Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has dawned upon you.
For behold, darkness covers the land;
deep gloom enshrouds the peoples.
But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will appear upon you.
Nations will stream to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawning.
Your gates will always be open;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of the Lord,
The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
Violence will no more be heard in your land,
ruin or destruction within your borders.
You will call your walls, Salvation,
and all your portals, Praise.
The sun will no more be your light by day;
by night you will not need the brightness of the moon.
The Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Song of Mary
Magnificat Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.
  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
  the holy catholic Church,
  the communion of saints,
  the forgiveness of sins,
  the resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
  thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
  on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
  And forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
  and the power, and the glory,
  forever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages
a short intercessory prayer

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us by your Holy Spirit.

Seasonal Collect:  First Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of our Lord
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Collect of the Day: Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission: O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Closing Prayers

Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Conclude with following
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14
