I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. Isaiah 49:6b

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God,
I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution
Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen

pure brightness of everliving Father in heaven

Now as we come to the setting of the sun
and our eyes behold the vesper light

The Lessons

Psalm 51

⁽¹⁾ Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. ⁽²⁾ Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. ⁽³⁾ For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. ⁽⁴⁾ Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight -- That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.

⁽⁵⁾ Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. ⁽⁶⁾ Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. ⁽⁷⁾ Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. ⁽⁸⁾ Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice.

⁽¹³⁾ Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You. ⁽¹⁴⁾ Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. ⁽¹⁵⁾ O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. ⁽¹⁶⁾ For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering.

⁽¹⁷⁾ The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart -- These, O God, You will not despise. ⁽¹⁸⁾ Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. ⁽¹⁹⁾ Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, With burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Isaiah Chapter 50

⁽¹⁾ Thus says the LORD: 'Where is the certificate of your mother's divorce, Whom I have put away? Or which of My creditors is it to whom I have sold you? For your iniquities you have sold yourselves, And for your transgressions your mother has been put away. ⁽²⁾ Why, when I came, was there no man? Why, when I called, was there none to answer? Is My hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Indeed with My rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness; Their fish stink because there is no water, And die of thirst. ⁽³⁾ I clothe the heavens with blackness, And I make sackcloth their covering.' ⁽⁴⁾ The Lord GOD has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned.

⁽⁵⁾ The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away. ⁽⁶⁾ I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting. ⁽⁷⁾ For the Lord GOD will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed. ⁽⁸⁾ He is near who justifies Me; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand together. Who is My adversary? Let him come near Me.

⁽⁹⁾ Surely the Lord GOD will help Me; Who is he who will condemn Me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up. ⁽¹⁰⁾ Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness And has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD And rely upon his God. ⁽¹¹⁾ Look, all you who kindle a fire, Who encircle yourselves with sparks: Walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks you have kindled -- This you shall have from My hand: You shall lie down in torment.

Galatians Chapter 3

⁽¹⁵⁾ Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man's covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. ⁽¹⁶⁾ Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as of many, but as of one, 'And to your Seed,' who is Christ. ⁽¹⁷⁾ And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. ⁽¹⁸⁾ For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

⁽¹⁹⁾ What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. ⁽²⁰⁾ Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. ⁽²¹⁾ Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. ⁽²²⁾ But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Mark Chapter 6

⁽⁴⁷⁾ Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. ⁽⁴⁸⁾ Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. ⁽⁴⁹⁾ And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out; ⁽⁵⁰⁾ for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, 'Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.'

⁽⁵¹⁾ Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. ⁽⁵²⁾ For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened. ⁽⁵³⁾ When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. ⁽⁵⁴⁾ And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,

⁽⁵⁵⁾ ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. ⁽⁵⁶⁾ Wherever He entered into villages, cities, or in the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended to the dead.
  On the third day he rose again.

Seasonal Collect:  Third Sunday after the Epiphany
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission: Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.
