Collect for: Proper 25 Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Old Testament Jeremiah 14:17-22 17 Therefore you shall say this word to them: 'Let my eyes flow with tears night and day, And let them not cease; For the virgin daughter of my people Has been broken with a mighty stroke, with a very severe blow. 18 If I go out to the field, Then behold, those slain with the sword! And if I enter the city, Then behold, those sick from famine! Yes, both prophet and priest go about in a land they do not know.' ' 19 Have You utterly rejected Judah? Has Your soul loathed Zion? Why have You stricken us so that there is no healing for us? Psalm Psalm 84 1 How lovely is Your tabernacle, O LORD of hosts! 2 My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. New Testament 2 Timothy 4:6-8 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. Or And with your spirit Deacon: May the Lord be on our minds, on our lips, and on our hearts as we hear His Holy Gospel. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. People: Glory to You, Lord Christ. Deacon: We are reading from Luke's Gospel chapter 18, beginning at verse 9. 9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men -- extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.' After the Gospel reading, the deacon elevates the book and says: Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Christ. Prayers of the People Prayers of the People for: Proper 25 Brothers and sisters, with perseverance and faith, let us approach God for our needs and those of the whole world. That the Church, through true humility and reconciliation, will be brought into unity and protected from all that would hinder Her from Godly accord. Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. The men and women willing to know and do God's Will will be elected to public office at every level. Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. That the legal profession will safeguard justice and uphold the rights of all, especially the poor, the powerless and the unborn. Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. That those who defend us at home and abroad, as well as those who come to our aid in times of trouble,  will be protected by God's mercy and grace. Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. That estranged family members will humble themselves and be reconciled to one another. Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. That the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the outcast will have faith in God as their provider and be assisted by His people. Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. For our own special intentions. (Pause) Lord in Your mercy,            Hear our prayer. Almighty God, You have given us the righteousness of Your Son Jesus. Hear our prayer and give us the grace to grow in faith and in His Holy image. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN
