Last Sunday after Epiphany
O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Old Testament 1
2 Kings 2:1-11
And it came to pass, when the LORD was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2
Then Elijah said to Elisha, 'Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.' But Elisha said, 'As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' So they went down to Bethel. 3
Now the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, 'Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?' And he said, 'Yes, I know; keep silent!' 4
Then Elijah said to him, 'Elisha, stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho.' But he said, 'As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' So they came to Jericho. 5
Now the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, 'Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?' So he answered, 'Yes, I know; keep silent!' 6
Then Elijah said to him, 'Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.' But he said, 'As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' So the two of them went on. 7
And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan. 8
Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9
And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?' Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.' 10
So he said, 'You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.' 11
Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
1 Officiant: The Word of the Lord. The People:
Thanks be to God.
The Mighty One, God the LORD, Has spoken and called the earth From the rising of the sun to its going down. 2
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth. 3
Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; A fire shall devour before Him, And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him. 4
He shall call to the heavens from above, And to the earth, that He may judge His people: 5
Gather My saints together to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.' 6
Let the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is Judge. Selah 7
Hear, O My people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you; I am God, your God! 8
I will not rebuke you for your sacrifices Or your burnt offerings, Which are continually before Me. 9
I will not take a bull from your house, Nor goats out of your folds. 10
For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11
I know all the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12
If I were hungry, I would not tell you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness. 13
Will I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats? 14
Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. 15
Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.' 16
But to the wicked God says: 'What right have you to declare My statutes, Or take My covenant in your mouth, 17
Seeing you hate instruction And cast My words behind you? 18
When you saw a thief, you consented with him, And have been a partaker with adulterers. 19
You give your mouth to evil, And your tongue frames deceit. 20
You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother's son. 21
These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you, And set them in order before your eyes. 22
Now consider this, you who forget God, Lest I tear you in pieces, And there be none to deliver: 23
Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God.' *At the end of the Psalms this is sung or said
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
New Testament 3
2 Corinthians 4:3-6
But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. 5
For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. 6
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Officiant: The Word of the Lord. The People:
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Introduction to the Gospel:
Deacon:The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you. Or And with your spirit
Deacon: May the Lord be on our minds, on our lips, and on our hearts as we hear His Holy Gospel. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark
People: Glory to You, Lord Christ.
Deacon: We are reading from Mark's Gospel chapter 9, beginning at verse 2
Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. 3
His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4
And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5
Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, 'Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah' -- 6
because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid. 7
And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!' 8
Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves. 9
Now as they came down from the mountain, He commanded them that they should tell no one the things they had seen, till the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
After the Gospel reading, the deacon can elevate the book and says:
Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
