Fifth Sunday of Easter
Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
New Testament 26
Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, 'Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.' This is desert. 27
So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28
was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29
Then the Spirit said to Philip, 'Go near and overtake this chariot.' 30
So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, 'Do you understand what you are reading?' 31
And he said, 'How can I, unless someone guides me?' And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32
The place in the Scripture which he read was this: 'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 33
In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.' 34
So the eunuch answered Philip and said, 'I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?' 35
Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36
Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, 'See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?' 37
Then Philip said, 'If you believe with all your heart, you may.' And he answered and said, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.' 38
So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39
Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 40
But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea. Officiant: The Word of the Lord. The People:
Thanks be to God.
My praise shall be of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him. 26
The poor shall eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! 27
All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. 28
For the kingdom is the LORD's, And He rules over the nations. 29
All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive. 30
A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, 31
They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this. *At the end of the Psalms this is sung or said
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
New Testament 7
1 John 4:7-16
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12
No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13
By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16
And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. Officiant: The Word of the Lord. The People:
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Introduction to the Gospel:
Deacon:The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you. Or And with your spirit
Deacon: May the Lord be on our minds, on our lips, and on our hearts as we hear His Holy Gospel. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John
People: Glory to You, Lord Christ.
Deacon: We are reading from John's Gospel chapter 15, beginning at verse 1
I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3
You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6
If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8
By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
After the Gospel reading, the deacon can elevate the book and says:
Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

That men and women will be raised up into positions of authority who will courageously expose injustice and corruption. Lord in Your mercy, Hear our prayer.
That God will raise up from among our children, Christian leaders who will shepherd His people and declare His praises in future generations. Lord in Your mercy, Hear our prayer.
That we, branches of the true vine, will bear much fruit and so glorify God the Father. Lord in Your mercy, Hear our prayer.
That those who are near death will experience Christ's presence, power and salvation. Lord in Your mercy, Hear our prayer.
That the poor, the homeless, the imprisoned and the downtrodden will experience the grace of God and the love of His people. Lord in Your mercy, Hear our prayer.
Loving Father, You demonstrated Your love toward us by sending Your Son into the world.
